The QuarkXPress 3.2 Patcher fixes several minor problems that you may have encountered with the current version of QuarkXPress. Problems corrected by the Patcher are listed at the end of this document.

Using the Patcher
The Preferences file from the patched version of QuarkXPress 3.2 is incompatible with the Preferences file of the unpatched version. So, you must patch all copies of QuarkXPress 3.2 at your site. This is particularly important to maintain the correct version of preferences in a networked environment.
To patch your copy of QuarkXPress 3.2:
1. Copy the patcher file to your hard disk.
2. Disable all System extensions (INITs), Control Panels (CDEVs) and virus detection utilities by doing one of following:
⢠If you are using System 6.x, move all unnecessary INITs and CDEVs out of your System folder and restart your Macintosh.
⢠If you are using System 7 or above, hold down the Shift key while restarting.
3. At the Desktop, double-click on the QuarkXPress 3.2 Patcher icon.
4. Use the controls in the Patcher dialog box to locate and select your current QuarkXPress 3.2 application.
5. Click OK to patch your QuarkXPress 3.2 application. An alert will notify you when the patch is complete.
6. Enable any disabled virus utilities, and return your System to its normal configuration by doing one of the following:
⢠For System 6.x users, return any INITs and CDEVs removed prior to installation to your System folder. Restart your Macintosh.
⢠For users of System 7 or above, do not hold down the Shift key when restarting.
NOTE: To verify the patch level of your QuarkXPress 3.2 application, open the QuarkXPress environment dialog box (hold down the Option key while selecting About QuarkXPress from the Apple menu). After running the Patcher, you should be at Patch Level 2.
Problems Fixed with the Patcher
Crash in large networks
When a computer was connected to very large networks (more than 512 zones), QuarkXPress would occasionally freeze when launched.
DCS clipping
If a picture box with a transparent background contained an imported DCS picture with clipping information, the knockout area on spot color plates was incorrect (the box, rather than the clipping area of the picture, knocked out of the plate).
Document Layout palette crash
In a document with four or more master pages, creating a new document page by dragging a master page icon to the document area of the Document Layout palette could cause a crash.
Fonts, installed but not available
Apple font specifications establish font ID ranges for various alphabets (or âscriptsâ). Roman alphabet font IDs, as dictated by Apple, are not to exceed 16383. Those that exceeded that range were not recognized by QuarkXPress. In some instances, fonts that did not exceed the ID range were not available in the unpatched version of QuarkXPress 3.2. This occurred when two or more fonts with IDs beyond 16383 were installed.
With the Roman alphabet system installed, all font IDs are recognized by the patched version of QuarkXPress 3.2. With multiple alphabet systems installed, font IDs will be matched to their appropriate alphabet system. In such cases, some Roman alphabet fonts with IDs greater than 16383 may not be available in the U.S. English version of QuarkXPress.
Polygon XTension incompatibility
Under some circumstances, third-party XTensions could cause QuarkXPress to crash when polygon picture boxes were manipulated.
Printing to printers connected to the printer port
When a computer was connected to a LaserWriter Select 310 via the printer port (but not necessarily to a network), users could receive an âunable to access networkâ error and not be able to print.
